Main Menu Sub Menu “Lights Out” Community Seudas ShlishisThe Aish Tamid “Lights Out!” Seudas Shlishis (Shabbos 3rd meal) is often standing room only and has successfully played an essential role in transforming what “oneg shabbos” means for hundreds of participants over the years. The concept is simple. Before electricity became standard in all homes, candles were the most common way to illuminate an indoor location. On Shabbos, the Torah forbids a person from kindling or extinguishing a flame. So what would happen hundreds of years ago before electricity when all of the candles burnt out towards the end of a 25 hour Shabbos period? The people were left with no choice but to conduct the 3rd Shabbos meal of Seudas Shlishis in the dark! The result was a remarkable and magical experience where community members would gather around their community Rebbe for singing and inspiration during the few precious minutes remaining of Shabbos. Classic Chassidic Rebbes used this “lights out” opportunity for delivering passionate and motivational sermons. All shuls offer a Seudas Shlishis.
