‘Teen at the Bean’ Workshops for Success!

“Teen@theBean” Workshops for Success is a one-of-a-kind program which provides a venue for teenage boys to hang-out, socialize, and discuss issues in a safe and relaxed environment.
“Teen@theBean” meets weekly on Tuesday and Thursday evenings at a local coffee shop, offering youth alternative programming after-school options, wherein religious, family and life issues are discussed in an culturally and age appropriate manner.
A Rabbi and trained social worker are present at each session, facilitating group discussions and meeting one-on-one with youth.
New relationships are established and follow-up meetings with each student are set-up.
The weekly group addresses specific issues that are engaging, relevant and age-appropriate for boys from ages 14-17 years old.
Each evening session has a strong Jewish overlay. The Rabbi or Social Worker integrate relevant Jewish or religious issues via role-playing/fact-pattern scenarios as a catalyst and springboard for group discussion. An opportunitty is provided for students to search out and debate pressing issues.

Students are attracted or referred to Aish Tamid through an informal word of mouth network thru current and former program participants, Rabbis, School Principals, parents and other members of the community.

When appropriate, educational programming and GED options are made available for those who have dropped out of school and drug and/or alcohol rehabilitation services are made available to students and parents, as needed.

Each student is provided with opportunitties for College and/or Yeshiva guidance or Career and Employment training.

Measurable program objectives include the following:
• Increase in spiritual growth and knowledge (promote attendance at local synagogues and adherence to traditional Jewish laws and customs);
• Increase in educational and career attainment (completition of high school and postsecondary/Yeshiva enrollment or employment)
• Decrease in suicidual attempts, drug usage and anti-social behavior;
• Decrease in court and legal interactions (completion of community service hours);
• Increase in healthy behaviors (reduction of smoking, encouraging physical sports and activities);
• Increase in family stability and functioning;
• Increase in parental undertanding and support.
• Increase self esteem and self sufficiency.

All students are required to participate in an initial intake assessment to capture presenting issues, family, health and educational history and aspirations for the future.

Staff members meet together to determine the appropriate course of action for each participant and design an IEP (Individual Education Plan) for each participant.

Staff meet one-on-one with 25+ boys weekly and are in weekly communication with hundreds of alumni through group classes, Instant Messaging and Email, providing ongoing support and mentoring.

Referrals to affiliated organizations are made when appropriate.

There is nothing like “Teen@theBean” in all of Los Angeles and it continues to leave a lasting impression on each student participant.

Please call the Aish Tamid office for information on how to attend the next exciting “Teen@theBean.”
